Queens Of Beirut
By : Renske Diks
Beirut is a city full of contrasts: o beautiful
Mediterranean metropolis with visible scars from the past, from the civil war (1975-1990), and the thawra (revolution, 2019), to the recent devastating explosion in the port of Beirut (2020). A vibrant city, burdened by one of the worst financial crises in history.
Queens of Beirut explores how the local drag community moves through this city. It looks at how seven Drag Queens - Sultana Queen, Narcissa, Sit Vanna, Latiza Bombé, Robyn Hoes, Anissa Krana and Emma Gration - relate to each other, society and to Lebanon in precorious times.
The reason why drag fascinates me so much is because of its transformative power Drag can transform a shy, insecure or traumatized person into a fierce, confident, and strong drag queen. With the personal stories and photographs of seven drag queens, I hope to give a stage to their experiences and to give a glimpse into what it means to be a drag queen in Beirut."
